AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FLAGSTAFF AZ
930 AM MST MON OCT 13 2008

.SYNOPSIS... A COLD AND DRY AIRMASS WILL REMAIN OVER THE NORTHLAND THROUGH TODAY. EXPECT BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES THE NEXT FEW DAYS WITH BREEZY NORTHEAST WINDS. A WARMING TREND SHOULD START WEDNESDAY AND LAST THROUGH FRIDAY AS HIGH PRESSURE BUILDS OVER THE DESERT SOUTHWEST.

.DISCUSSION...
WATER VAPOR LOOP THIS MORNING SHOWS THE SLOW MOVING POSITIVE TILT TROUGH ALONG A LINE FROM SERN WYOMING THROUGH YUMA. A COLD FRONT IS DROPPING SOUTHWARD THROUGH EASTERN NEW MEXICO. TODAYS 12Z MODEL RUNS CONTINUE TO MOVE THE UPPER LOW SLOWLY THROUGH THE 4 CORNERS THROUGH TUESDAY... AND STREAM A DECENT AMOUNT OF MOISTURE NORTHWESTWARD ACROSS NEW MEXICO ( SEEN IN CROSS SECTIONS AND A PLOT OF RH AND WIND ON THE 305 K SFC) DURING THIS TIME. WE WILL TAKE A LOOK AT INCREASING CLOUD COVER AND MAYBE A SLIGHT CHANCE OF SHOWERS FOR THE AZ / NM BORDER ON TUESDAY. ELSEWHERE... BRISK NORTHEAST WINDS WILL INCREASE TODAY AND CONTINUE THROUGH TUESDAY. PREV DISCUSSION... 230 AM... IT IS ANOTHER CLEAR AND COLD NIGHT ACROSS NORTHERN ARIZONA WITH RATHER LIGHT WINDS. SURFACE DEWPOINTS ONCE AGAIN ARE MAINLY IN THE SINGLE DIGITS AS A DRY AIRMASS SITS OVER THE REGION. A WEAK UPPER TROUGH IS SET TO SLOWLY MOVE ACROSS NORTHERN ARIZONA TODAY THROUGH THIS EVENING. NOT MUCH MOISTURE IS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS SYSTEM AND WE MAY SEE A FEW CLOUDS IN THE NORTHERN AND EASTERN SECTIONS LATER THIS AFTERNOON... BUT THAT IS ABOUT IT. THE MAIN IMPACT OF THIS SYSTEM WILL BE NORTHEASTERLY WINDS THAT WILL SET UP AS A RESULT OF THIS TROUGH PASSAGE. FOR THIS EVENING EXPECT WINDS TO STAY UP ACROSS THE DOWNWIND LOCALES OF THE MOGOLLON RIM SOUTH... WHICH WILL HELP TO MODERATE OVERNIGHT LOWS A BIT IN THESE AREAS. WINDS DURING THE AFTERNOON TUESDAY SHOULD ALSO BE UP IN THE BREEZY CATEGORY AS WELL... AND MAY DELAY OUR WARM-UP FOR A DAY. BUT THE LOW IS FORECAST TO MOVE OFF TO THE NORTHEAST SO THAT BY WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY A RIDGE TRIES TO BUILD DURING THIS TIME. EXPECT DRY CONDITIONS FOR THE MID-WEEK PORTION. MODEL SOLUTIONS DIGRESS BY THE LATTER PORTIONS OF THE WEEK AND THERE MIGHT BE A SLIGHT INCREASE IN MOISTURE AS ANOTHER SYSTEM COMES ASHORE. AS A RESULT HAVE KEPT LOW END POPS IN THE EXTENDED AS WELL AS BUMPED THE WINDS UP. TEMPERATURES ARE ANTICIPATED TO REMAIN NEAR SEASONABLE NORMS.

.AVIATION... FOR THE 18Z PACKAGE... VFR CONDITIONS EXPECTED FOR THE NEXT 24 HOURS. WINDS N-NE 10-15KT GUSTING TO 25 KNOTS THIS AFTERNOON. AVIATION DISCUSSION NOT UPDATED FOR AMENDMENTS.

.FGZ WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... NONE.
